Chinese Social and Ideological Transformation and International Status Change Behind the “New Chinese Style”

I am a PhD researcher in the V&A/RCA History of Design Programme. My current research centres on “New Chinese Style” (Xin Zhong Shi), moving beyond its commercial context to analyse its socio-political genealogy, psychological drivers, dissemination patterns, and broader impact.

Prior to my doctoral studies, I worked as a fashion consultant and journalist in Shanghai, where I facilitated cultural translation and market strategies for international brands navigating the Chinese landscape. My academic background includes an MSc in Fashion Psychology from the University of the Arts London and a BA in Translation from Zhejiang University. These diverse experiences have shaped my current research perspective and inspired me to examine fashion trends through an interdisciplinary lens.

My thesis supervisor is Professor Sarah Cheang.
